Seaton Down Hoard Celebration

The Seaton Down is now on display in RAMM’s Making History gallery. On 30th June Professor Alice Roberts helped to celebrate the final coin being installed. Conservator Sarah Klopf added the last coin and guests were invited to enjoy the new display. As part of the celebration Thomas Cadbury started a lecture evening with a short talk on the project. Professor Alice Roberts followed this with her lecture on the Celts.

Seaton Down Hoard on display

The new exhibit in Making History opened to the public on 1st July and is now on permanent display. The 22,888 coins have been displayed to reveal the shape of the pit they were found in. The coins are a unique glimpse of 4th century Roman life and illustrate many of the political issues of the time. Nevertheless the coins are also deeply mysterious. Why they were buried and by whom is still unknown. Clues found during the conservation process continue to add to the evidence proving the story of the Hoard continues.

The Seaton Down Hoard project is now complete. Throughout the year the team worked with 4,350 school pupils in 47 different schools and more than 20,000 people enjoyed the Roman activities including coin making both in RAMM and throughout Devon at different events. 117 different volunteers helped to clean the coins and a further 54 volunteers helped deliver tours, object handling and other activities. As part of the project all cleaned coins have been photographed and will go onto the Collections Explorer website.

Thanks to all those who supported the project and special thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund, Clinton Devon Estates, Thomson Reuters, Devon County Council, Patrick and Sally Long and many members of the public.
