Conservation placement and internship opportunities

RAMM offers several conservation placement and internship training opportunities each year including:

  • Short placements for individuals wishing to gain experience in order to apply to conservation training courses
  • Placements for conservation students who need to build up experience ‘at the bench’ as part of their conservation training
  • Longer internships of three months to a year duration for conservation students with more academic experience, who need to complete a longer ‘in service’ placement as part of their training, or to gain practical experience immediately after graduation. Interns are expected to work closely with staff on a full range of conservation tasks, in line with our current priorities.
  • Longer-term volunteering opportunities for local people who would like to get involved with helping us to care for the collections. Past and current projects include making conservation packaging for the costume and textile collections, repacking the photographic collections into conservation grade materials, helping to pack up the collections for moving to a new store, etc.

RAMM has worked successfully in partnership with institutions from as far afield as Brazil and Germany. Closer to home, we have hosted conservation students from UCL, Durham, Cardiff and Lincoln Universities.

  • Ashley Lingle recently commented: ‘Working at RAMM during the redevelopment has given me the opportunity to work on a wide variety of conservation projects and an insight into the design work that must occur behind the scenes in order to achieve the amazing new displays.’
  • Vicky Singleton said that: ‘During my time at RAMM I have enjoyed working within a friendly and supportive environment. Under the supervision of RAMM’s experienced conservation team I have worked across the collections to develop a diverse skill-set which I look forward to using in my future career.’
  • Päivi Leppanen: ‘As an international student I have found the department very welcoming and my work here has complemented my university course in conservation very well. I have extended my knowledge base by learning techniques and working with many materials that were previously unfamiliar to me.’
  • Leonie Gärtner, Intern from Stuttgart University in 2003 commented ‘This internship inspired me to pursue a specialisation in conservation of ethnographic objects and enabled me to be and work where I am today. I will ever be grateful’
